When you were growing up, your mother probably told you to make your bed. While as a child this might have been a buzzkill, especially during the holidays when you were wanting to get out as soon as possible, this simple chore actually has so many benefits. You have probably used every excuse in the book not to make your bed in the morning, excuses such as:
- “I’m late for work and do not have time for it”,
- “What is the use it is just going to get messed up again”,
- “It is just me who sees my bed”
- “It does not have any importance right now”
- “The cat is snuggling under the blankets and I don’t want to bother him”
But tidying beds is not at all a difficult task, in fact, less energy is used to make the bed than you would need when thinking of an excuse not to make it, and then convincing yourself that the excuse is valid. Your bed does not need to resemble that of a five-star hotel bed but merely a fluff of your duvet cover and pillow will suffice.
Let’s have a quick look at how making beds in the morning can have a beneficial effect on our everyday life.
- You will start your day right
Something as simple as making your bed in the morning sets your day’s events in motion and also sets the tone for the day. Naval Admiral William McRaven, the commander of U.S. Special Operations explained this task in the best way possible in his “2014 commencement speech” at the University of Texas at Austin: “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.” Start your day the right way with a made bed.
- Encourages Tidiness
Even the most beautifully decorated room that is worthy of a spread in a “House and Home” magazine will look untidy if the bed isn’t made. Making the bed every morning will not only make your bedroom look bigger but will also make it look more stylish and neat giving you that welcoming feeling when you return home at night, welcoming you to fall into it again tonight. Once the routine of making your bed every morning is settled in you might even feel a spark of inspiration to improve the appearance of your bedroom with the smallest of decorative pieces or just a quick change around. A neat bed leads to a neat bedroom and a neat bedroom is one small step towards becoming a more accomplished you.
- Increased Productivity
It might sound farfetched but it is true. By taking two minutes to make your bed in the morning you’ve increase your daily productivity. Making your bed is a habit that you need to teach yourself and as it has been proven time and time again that getting into a routine with specific habit increases your concentration and productivity so is the case with making your bed. By doing this task first thing in the morning you give yourself a sense of accomplishment as you have conquered the first task of your day. This leads to encouragement to do the next task and the next and so on, making you a much more productive individual. By making your bed you are also eliminating that thought of getting back into it during the day, even for just a few more minutes of rest, ensuring that you use ever possible minute to be productive.
- Decreases Stress
Your bedroom is like your sanctuary and it is the one place that you have to feel comfortable, relaxed and in control. So if it has a messy, disorganised appearance then it is most certainly going to be the one room that you are going to avoid as far as possible. When you get home after a long day of work then your room is the one place that you need to be able to go to and de-stress, however, if you walk in and it looks the way that you feel then all it is going to do is turn your mood into an unpleasant one. We spend a third of our lives in our beds and because of that, we see it as our safe haven that is why we decorate it to our liking and choose a bed that suits our sleeping preferences. Making your bed brightens your mood instantly as your sanctuary is as it should be, helping to decrease your stress levels instantly as it is one less headache on your list for the day.
- It improves the mood of your room
When booking into a hotel, the one thing you look forward to the most is that clean, bright room with a bed that just screams at you to snuggle up in it. Now take a moment and imagine if you walk into that hotel room and that bed is not made up. It just ruins your entire experience. It is the same with your own bed. Your bed is the one thing that is always your comfortable space whether you are happy, sad, tired, stressed or just in need of a good night’s rest. It is the one thing that can make you feel better about yourself and about your day ahead if you just give it two minutes of your attention by making it.
If you are looking for a good way to improve your mood and start your day off on the right footing, then you have to start with making your bed. When you have made your bed, you might be starting your day off on a more relaxed note as you have organised the start of your day. And there is nothing better than sinking flinging back the covers after a long day and climbing back into bed.
