Do you need an extra length bed? Too tall for a shorter one? How do you know?

I was speaking to a friend of mine last night who is quite tall, and he has a lot of trouble finding a bed he can sleep on comfortably. We were discussing things like where do you find a king size bed, measured in cm in South Africa. His previous bed was a normal length three quarter bed, and he had to sleep sort of diagonally to fit inside the bed and not have his feet hanging off the edge of the bed, getting cold. He’s now sleeping on a normal length queen sized bed, which he says is much more comfortable because he has space to stretch out. This seems like a simple realisation, but the size of your bed really does matter to how well you sleep.

On the queen sized bed, my friend is more comfortable because while he still has to lie diagonally, he has more room on the bed, so he doesn’t feel as cramped. On the three quarter, He was lying on the edge of the bed with his shoulder, his weight pushing the side down, and making his back ache from the strange angle. He still can’t lie straight, because he’s on a normal length bed and he’s simply too long for it, but the bigger bed definitely makes him more comfortable. Do you know what length and width bed to buy for yourself?

Wide enough?
Wide enough?

A normal length bed is 188cm, or 2 meters long. The average person in South Africa is between 1,6 and 1,7. This leaves about 20cm for your pillow and room for your feet. A good guideline is to have that minimum of extra 12cm in the length of the bed for the comfort your sleep. An extra length bed is generally 200 cm, or 2 meters. The extra length can never be too much, so if you are over 1,7 meters, get the extra length bed and enjoy the extra space. The amount of space available on your bed are very important for restful sleep. The larger your sleeping surface is, the better your sleep will be, as you have more room to stretch out and relax. A bed that forces you to be cramped, such as a single bed for a larger adult, will restrict your need to relax entirely while sleeping, so when looking at the size of your bed look at how wide it is too, not just how long. If you can afford a bigger bed, and have the space, always up size. Have a double but the room for a queen? Get the queen! This will vastly improve how well you sleep at night. However, if you’re sleeping alone, a bed that’s too big might feel like you’re lost in the bed, so don’t go too big unnecessarily, choose your size wisely.
