There are numerous studies showing that interrupted sleep, too little sleep, and sleep of a low quality are all contributing factors to weight gain. Winter is the season where the cold weather makes us pack on the warming foods, carbs like bread, pastries and pastas, sugar in hot chocolate, more cups of coffee than usual, and everything else that helps us feel warmer. Unfortunately, this means that our bodies start gathering fat against the cold too. One of the reasons the body will try to gather even more energy from foods is because it’s not getting enough sleep, and one of the ways you can lessen any weight gain during winter is to get restful sleep that gives you energy against the cold. Getting the right amount of sleep does not always mean upping the amount of hours. Sometimes it simply means arranging your circumstances to ensure that you sleep well.
For instance, if you have a mattress that is sagging in the middle or on the corners, or if you share a bed with a partner who is restless at night, your sleep will be of much lower quality than it should be. This will lead to lower energy levels during the day, and higher cravings for sugary foods. The fix is easy: no strict exercise regime is required! You simply need to buy a new mattress. If you wake up sweaty, your duvet cover might be reflecting heat rather than storing it in your duvet. A good microfiber duvet will be warm and light, making for a far more comfortable night’s sleep. It’ll also make it easier to make your bed in the mornings. Also ensure that your duvet is partnered with a duvet cover that will store your body heat, not reflect it, and your sleep will be as sweet and deep as a baby’s.
