1 review for Sealy La Difference Jonelle – King XL Mattress

  1. Rated 4 out of 5

Bought this mattress in King extra length from The Mattress Warehouse store in Randburg. They are made to order by the factory, but the mattress was delivered sooner than estimated. (Shout out to Max! Thank you, sir.)

About the mattress: Oh my, La différance! Perfect for side sleepers to relieve pressure points (hips and shoulders) and still offers good support. Not too soft for back sleepers either, but probably not great for stomach sleepers. Although it is essentially a hybrid and does contain memory foam and latex, it does not sleep hot.

    – Beautifully made.
    – Oh so comfortable!
    – Soft upper layers, but support in lower layers, so the mattress does not give the impression of swallowing you when you lie down.
    – Does not sleep hot.
    – No sensation of rolling off the sides of the bed, despite it being a pillow-top mattress. (Cannot say the same for the plush Sealy Crown Jewel model tested!)
    – The sides seem really well-supported when you sit to get on or off. Be warned though, even if you are of average height, your feet probably won’t touch the ground if the mattress is on a regular wood/sleigh base.
    – No creaking, squeaking or other spring-related noises.
    – You cannot even feel the springs at all.
    – No motion transfer.
    – Not challenging to move around on.

    – Expensive. However, you get what you pay for.
    – Unbelievably heavy. Seriously. Takes at least two very strong guys to pick up and carry. A couple might manage to rotate it if they are relatively fit. Even making the bed and tucking the flat sheet under is a bit of a workout.
    – Due to the depth of the mattress (about 40cm), it is really hard to find bed linens that actually fit! The Sealy mattress protector (extra purchase necessary for the 100 day trial) fits well. Volpes extra depth Egyptian Cotton fitted sheets only barely reach the lower corners and do not wrap around properly as fitted sheets should. Buy Super King duvet sets and flat sheets. Perhaps even Super King fitted sheets? Sealy does offer linens for these huge mattresses, but in white only.

Haven’t had the mattress for very long, so cannot attest to its durability.

Now where to find a blanket??? Winter is coming. Width required: 183cm + (2x40cm) + extra to tuck in on both sides when the bed is made = more than 280cm wide? Lenght: (200cm – 20cm) + 40cm + extra to tuck = at least 240cm long. 🙁 Now I realise why this mattress is not available in Super King size.

I’m deducting one star purely for cost and the inconvenience of finding linens that fit! Other than that, the mattress itself is absolutely divine.

Super Firm – This comfort rating is a hard one to stomach. Literally, beds with a comfort rating of 1 are made specifically for back sleepers. You might as well sleep on the floor if you’re going for the side or stomach approach with this level of firmness. This bed focuses on spine alignment and has little padding. If you’re a stomach sleeper, this bed will have you counting sheep all night long.
Medium Firmness – This bed is similar to a 1 rating, in terms of keeping your spine aligned and sleeping on your back. However, a 2 is also suitable for stomach sleepers who enjoy a little more firmness. Such a mattress does offer a little more padding to stomach and back sleepers, but it is usually a little too hard for you side folk.
Medium Comfort – Beds in this comfort scale usually fits most people’s needs. 3 Rating beds can be seen as the equilibrium of the sleeping styles. They are perfect for guest bedrooms and are also well suited for the hospitality industry. This bed is normally soft enough for the average side sleeper and supportive enough for back and stomach sleepers.
Nice and soft – This comfort rating is ideal for side sleepers, as well as back sleepers who want to experience the sensation of being embraced by the mattress. A 4 comfort level mattress should not be considered by a stomach sleeper, as the softness will cause an unwanted arch in the back. A mattress like this focuses less on back support and more on pressure relief.
Sleeping on Marshmallows – Ever wonder what sinking into clouds would feel like? Well, here you go. The 5 comfort rating is the precipice of pressure relief. Beds with this rating are absolutely perfect for those side sleepers who want peak comfort. They are also suitable to some back sleepers who want to maximize pressure relief. This bed should be avoided by a stomach sleeper, as it will guarantee a visit to the chiropractor.
