Make Your Bed: Tips for a Hotel-Worthy Bed

Author imageThe Mattress Warehouse

Have you ever gone to sit on a hotel bed, and it just felt like a crime? Simply because of how crisp yet fluffy and cosy it looked? And when you finally toss yourself onto it, it feels like a literal cloud-nine experience? Do you ever wonder why, no matter how much you make your bed, it doesn’t feel like the ones at your favourite hotel? Well, wonder no more. The secret’s out of the bag. At The Mattress Warehouse, we don’t gate-keep. We care about your bedroom and sleep experience. Read on as we share a step-by-step guide to creating a hotel-worthy bed at home.

1. Quality Mattress is Key

For many of us, coming home after a long day, the only thing on our minds is relaxing. And perhaps snoozing and forgetting about the day’s events. Where is the best place to do that besides in a comfy, inviting bedroom? A supportive mattress is the most crucial aspect of any comfortable bed. It is probably the most important part of your bed and impacts the quality of your sleep. With various options, it is important to consider the material, size, and firmness that best suits your sleep needs.

Check out this accompanying article on choosing the right mattress for you.

2. Make Your Bed with High-Quality Linens

Two magic words you cannot forget: thread count. The secret to the luxurious feel of the linen used by fancy hotels is in the thread count. A high thread count sheet turns your mattress from just a lumpy ol’ bed to an inviting ‘Lala-land carriage’. You want to use natural fibre material, like cotton or linen. That’s where the charm is – in the natural element. These materials feel amazingly soft on the skin and also have breathable features. Our guide on the latest bedding trends details how to consider linen that suits your sleeping style.

3. Master the Art of Layering

Think of your bed as a sandwich. A dagwood, if you will. It’s an odd analogy, but follow, we’re getting somewhere with this. The more layers it has, the more scrumptious and salivating it is, right? The same goes for your bed. The more layers you add when you make your bed, the more plush and inviting it looks. That is how hotels also make their beds look so inviting. Start with a fitted sheet, ensuring it’s pulled tight and smooth. Add a flat sheet, then finish with a duvet or comforter for warmth and style. You can add a blanket between the fitted sheet and duvet if you really want to go all out.

4. Arrange Pillows with Style

Have you ever noticed how you never run out of pillows in a hotel? If you’re uncomfortable with one, there are probably five more to choose from. Pillows complete the bed’s image. They give your bed an elevated and full look. Two full pillows go first at the back, followed by another two (or more) decorative pillows for a splash of personality. Moreover, a symmetrical arrangement of the pillows is the number one rule for an elegant and stylish appearance.

5. Skillfully Tuck Your Bed

What sets hotel beds apart from any other bed is the tight tuck of the bedding. But, with a little bit of effort, you can make your bed look hotel-worthy, too. That crisp, fresh look is achieved in these four easy steps:

  1. Straighten the edges of your flat sheet and duvet. The four corners of each item must align with the corners of the bed.
  2. Tuck the sheet and the duvet at the foot of the bed.
  3. Neatly fold the corners of the sheet into a triangle and lift each side of the bed to tuck each folded triangle.
  4. Gently run your hands on the top of the bed to smoothen out any creases.

6. Add a Runner or Throw

An added bonus to an elevated look when making your bed is a throw or runner. These not only add texture to your bedroom but also colour and an elegant personal style. Moreover, a throw or runner at the foot of the bed shields the duvet cover from getting dirty. Especially since the foot of the bed is one of the most accessible spaces of the bed.
