10 Tips for Couples on Selecting a Mattress

Author imageThe Mattress Warehouse

Are you tired of waking up tired? Do you feel that you do not want to sleep next to your spouse anymore because he or she keeps you awake at night? If that is the case, you shouldn’t be too stressed out about it. Most couples go through bad nights and feel like they want to murder each other because of too much snoring. But snoring is definitely not the only problem that couples can have in bed. If one partner turns a lot in his or her sleep, it can have a negative influence on the other. Maybe one of you likes to sleep under a sheet and the other one prefers a duvet? Or maybe your partner is really tall and he or she hogs all the leg space in your bed.

The point is, sleeping in the same bed with someone else can be quite challenging. And believe me when I say that waking up next to your partner is very rarely as sexy as in the movies. Sometimes it can be quite traumatic to wake up next to someone else, especially if they’ve stolen all of the blankets, or kicked you awake.

For that reason, we decided to give you couples a few tips for buying a mattress. So, read on to find out how to go about selecting the best mattress for you and your soulmate!

1. Couples should be aware that sleeping in the same bed is not always easy before buying a mattress together

We are not love-guru’s here at the Mattress Warehouse, but we do know that quality mattresses are not necessarily cheap. Therefore you should make sure that you are buying a bed with the right person.

For better or worse, in the 21st century, people do not wait to get married before they move in together anymore. One of the main reasons that people do that is so that they have the easy option of leaving if they don’t feel like being in the relationship anymore. So before you move in with someone, and definitely before you buy a bed with someone, make sure he or she is the one for you. At least until the mattress warranty runs out :p

2. Budget properly

Many couples tend to think that spending some money on a proper mattress is a waste. If you are one of those people, think again! How can you believe that investing in a good mattress is a waste of money? Think about it; you will spend more time in or on your bed than on any other piece of furniture you own. That is of course if you sleep enough (between seven and nine hours per night for adults). Okay, maybe you will spend as much time in your office chair, but who’s counting?

It would help if you were willing to spend at least R10,000 on your new mattress. Let’s do some quick maths to see if it is worth it: A good mattress should last you at least ten years. So if you sleep on it for ten years that comes down to 3650 nights spent in bed. That’s R2.74c per night or 39c per hour. Not so expensive anymore, is it?

However, if you simply do not have the cash handy to buy a top end bed, take a look at our Rest Assured bed range. The entry-level beds were designed specifically for people who want to buy quality beds on a tight budget. You can get a queen size dual coil innerspring bed that offers stability and support for your entire body from as little as R4000.

3. Do some research

Before you go to your nearest furniture outlet, read up on current mattress technology. There is a selection of different techniques on the market, from pure foam to air mattresses. If your partner rolls around a lot, check out our Cloud Nine mattresses. They do not transfer any movement through the rest of the bed, so you won’t even be aware of your partner’s nocturnal tossing and turning! Maybe you snore, and it annoys the living daylight out of your partner? Not a problem. Cloud Nine mattresses have built-in anti-allergens that will aid you in overcoming the snore.

You should also know about the Kooi Plush bed range. These beds are built out of various layers of foam, to create the perfect sleep experience for almost any sleeper! The base of the mattress is made of high-density foam to support the rest of the mattress, much like a foundation would support a road. From there you get a slightly less dense layer of foam, followed by a memory foam layer and topped off with elastic foam to give the mattress that extra bit of bounce. With a wide variety of mattresses to choose from, Kooi caters for almost any couples sleeping needs.

When you walk into the shop, you should have a general idea of what you are looking for. Don’t just step in and get the first, cheapest mattress.

4. Know which type of mattress is best for you and your partner

Most couples go through life without knowing which kind of mattress works the best for them. However, do not fear! You can quickly solve that problem. Just pay attention to how you fall asleep at night and ask your partner to tell you in which position you sleep the most. That will already tell you more about the appropriate type of mattress for you.

For instance, if you sleep on your stomach, memory foam might not be the best option, because the foam can leave your spine unsupported and cause discomfort and pain. In this case, Sealy might be a great option! With a unique combination that offers both foam and coil technology in the same mattress, this is perfect for stomach, back and side sleepers. Therefore, even if you are a stomach sleeper and your partner is a side sleeper, you can both sleep comfortably and wake up feeling well rested.

5. Test the mattress before you buy it

Testing out a mattress in store may sound a bit strange, but it is not. When you are looking to buy a car, you take it out for a test drive before cashing up. Similarly, if you want to buy a new bed, you should do the same. Besides, bed outlets should not have a problem with customers lying around on their beds for ten to twenty minutes at a time. Moreover, if you feel uncomfortable lying on a bed in a bed shop, chase the salesperson away and lie in peace!

Please, ladies and gentlemen, this is one of the most critical aspects of choosing a new mattress. You have to lie on it to make sure that it is the one. Lie down for a while, toss and turn, lie down like you usually lie before falling asleep. Make sure it is comfortable for both you and your partner before buying it.

6. Get the right size

When you lie down on the mattress in the bed shop, roll around and make yourselves comfortable. Couples should have enough space to move around in bed with ease. In the long run, sleeping soundly next to your significant other helps to stabilise your relationship, so you want to make sure you have enough room to breathe! Think about it, if you sleep well you are less likely to feel groggy and therefore less likely to fight.

Also, make sure that the mattress isn’t too large for the room you want to put it in.

7. Set aside enough time to select the right mattress

For many couples buying a new bed or mattress is just one more thing to do. Thus they rush into it and don’t spend enough time to choose carefully. Try to avoid rushing it! We already mentioned that a mattress is probably the piece of furniture that you will spend the most time on, so making the right choice is crucial. Having the right mattress will ensure the quality of your sleep and as such will improve your standard of living.

You just can’t rush buying a mattress! Make a romantic date out of it if you will!

8. Consider alternatives

If you really can’t find the perfect mattress for both you and your partner, think outside of the box. If you prefer the memory foam and your partner prefers the air mattress, or you want a soft mattress, and he/she wants a hard one… Well, there are other options. In Europe, most couples don’t sleep on actual double beds. Most European couples push two single beds together, and voila, they have a “double bed“! It can be quite difficult to purchase a double bed mattress in Germany!

So if you can’t settle for one mattress, why not get two and push them together?

9. Get quality sheets to go with your mattress

While you are at it, why don’t you only get some excellent sheets to go with your new mattress? Enhance your new sleep experience by adding a nice set of brand new sheets to the bed! Bamboo sheets are perfect for regulating body temperature, so if you and your partner prefer to sleep under different kinds of blankets or sheets, this might be the one for you!

10. Make sure the bed has a trial period or return policy

No-one wants to spend R10,000 on something only to find out that they don’t like what they bought. It is an expensive mistake to make, and you don’t want to make that mistake on something you intend to sleep in for the next ten years. Therefore, if you buy a new bed, make sure that you can return the mattress or at least exchange it for another mattress if you are not happy with it. Most reputable bed shops will have return policies in place, but before you buy the bed, make sure with the sales consultant.

Happy shopping! We hope you find the perfect bed for you and your partner!
