Answer a few simple questions and we’ll direct you to your perfect bed.
How intimately do we want to get to know technology, and technology to know us? Would we go to bed with it? The newest item on smart bedding has nothing to do with technology, and everything to do with good old fashioned buttons. Some are saying it isn’t smart bedding at all, just a quick hack. But if it’s so easy, why has no one else thought of it yet? But in regards to technology, the bedding isn’t really “smart”: I think what people really mean when they think of a smart bedding is a bed that monitors your heart beat, sleep patterns, brain activity and reports back to you tell you how you could sleep better. Some are for, some are against such close contact with technology and the large amount of personal information gathered.
I must say, something that could open up the mysteries of the time I’m asleep when I’m not aware of anything, would definitely be fascinating to me. I could see how often I tossed and turned, my sleeping pattern when tired vs when getting regular sleep, and so one. I think our sleep could improve rapidly, and smart bedding could really be a benefit to us. For instance, if I had a nightly accurate reading of my sleep phases, I would find out when is the best time to wake up or go to sleep based on my schedule and body clock to feel the most rested when sleeping. If I had a fitted sheet that measured the amount of pressure on each point of my body, I would see how my pressure points are affected by my mattress, if my mattress is perhaps too firm, or simply know exactly what my preferences are in a mattress, as a reference next time I went shopping. Plug your information into the mattress shop’s computer, and it will bring up the perfect bed for you! Thinking about such possibilities and advances is very exciting and interesting, but are they just fanatics, are possibly something that could become a reality?
Another way the data gathered by smart bedding is measuring the room temperature and my body temperature and discovering my optimal sleeping temperature. With this knowledge, I would know what sheets and linen to buy for my bed that would keep me the most comfortable. I think this could be the most useful when a couple gets married and need to combine their sleeping preferences! Maybe he’ll need memory foam and she an innerspring? How can they compromise? Even though we have very effective bedding today, especially anything made from 100% cotton, I think having that extra bit of intel would make choosing which bedding to use much much easier. 100% cotton linen is breathable, warm in winter and cool in summer, and skin friendly, but I wonder if our technology would be able to fit seamlessly into that. The bedding would obviously need to be machine washable, but if there is an info gathering database stored in it, how will it be?
